eSIM compatible devices: does your phone support eSIM?

Most flagship phones from 2018 onward support eSIM — but the same model can behave differently depending on the country and carrier it was bought from. Here's an honest, current list by brand, the exceptions that catch people out, and a 30-second check for your own device.

The 30-second check: does your device support eSIM?

Before scanning any list, ask the phone itself. This is the only answer that accounts for your exact region and carrier variant:

  1. 1

    Dial *#06#

Open the dialer and type *#06#. If a 32-digit EID appears next to the IMEI, your phone has eSIM hardware.

  2. 2

    Check Settings

iPhone: Settings › General › About, look for an EID. Android: Settings › Network & internet › SIMs › Add eSIM.

  3. 3

    Confirm it's unlocked

A carrier-locked phone may have eSIM hardware but block third-party eSIMs. An unlocked device works with any provider.

If there's no EID, the device has no eSIM hardware and can't use one — no app or setting can add it. If the EID is there, you're good to go.

The tables below reflect manufacturer documentation and major eSIM-provider lists as of July 2026. Read the notes carefully — a "Depends on version" row means the model exists in both eSIM and non-eSIM variants depending on where it was sold.

The exceptions that trip people up

Nearly every "my phone won't take an eSIM" case comes down to one of these:

  • Mainland-China iPhones. Most ship with two physical SIM slots and no eSIM. As of 2026 only the iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM in mainland China.
  • US Galaxy S20. It has no eSIM, even though the international S20 does. Samsung fixed this from the S21 onward.
  • Hong Kong / Macao iPhones. Many use dual physical SIM; only a few models (12 mini, 13 mini, SE 2020, XS) have eSIM there.
  • Early Pixels (2, 3, 3a). eSIM is locked to specific carriers or regions — e.g. Pixel 3a on Verizon has no eSIM.
  • Carrier-locked phones. The hardware may support eSIM, but a locked device can refuse a third-party eSIM until it's unlocked.

FAQ

How do I check if my phone supports eSIM?+

Fastest way: dial *#06# on the phone's dialer. If a 32-digit EID number appears alongside the IMEI, the device has eSIM hardware. You can also check in Settings — on iPhone go to Settings › General › About and look for 'Available SIM' or an EID; on Android go to Settings › Network & internet › SIMs and look for an 'Add eSIM' or 'Download a SIM instead' option.

Does the iPhone support eSIM?+

Yes — every iPhone from the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR (2018) onward supports eSIM, with two big exceptions tied to where the phone was bought: mainland-China iPhones mostly ship dual physical SIM with no eSIM, and many Hong Kong / Macao models also use two physical SIMs instead. US iPhone 14 and later are eSIM-only with no SIM tray.

Why does the same phone model support eSIM in one country but not another?+

Manufacturers ship region-specific hardware. The classic cases: the US Galaxy S20 has no eSIM while international S20s do; mainland-China iPhones swap eSIM for a second physical SIM slot; and early Pixel 3 / 3a units are eSIM-locked to certain carriers. That's why checking your specific device with *#06# beats trusting a model-name list.

Can I use an eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time?+

On most eSIM phones, yes — you can run one physical nano-SIM plus one eSIM (Dual SIM Dual Standby), keeping your home number active while a travel data eSIM handles the internet. On the newest US iPhones (14 and later) there's no physical tray, so you run two eSIMs instead.

My phone supports eSIM — can I buy a 0xEsim plan without an account?+
